The
River Drowes is regarded as one of the premier salmon fisheries
in the country and frequently produces the first Salmon of
the season on opening day on January 1st. The river is some
5 and half miles in length with over 70 named pools. It has
a mix of excellent fly water and slower deeper pools suitable
for spinning and bait fishing. The river is very accessible
with wooden walkways along much of its bank and good access
from roads and bridges.
The drowse flows from
Lough Melvin to the sea at Tullaghan. Where the river flows
from Lough Melvin, at Lareen Estate we have 10 holiday cottages
to cater for the needs of visiting anglers. The cottages range
from 2 to 4 bed and can accommodate groups of between 2 and
8 people. Also on the Estate we have an on site, freezing
and drying facilities and boats and engines are available
for Lough Melvin.
Melvin is rightly famous
for its salmon and trout fishing and remains today one of
the few examples of a post-glacial salmonid Lough and it is
still in a relatively pristine state. The quality of the angling
can be extraordinary and it is this, together with the unique
fish fauna, the draws and attracts the anglers. The Lough
holds salmon char and perch in addition to trout, but it is
the trout that are of primary interest to most anglers. It
is generally accepted by fishery scientists that there are
four genetically distinct races of trout in the Lough. These
are brown trout, Ferox trout, Gillaroo trout and Sonaghan
trout – each clearly distinguishable by coloration,
size and shape. While they may share the same spawning grounds,
they do not interbreed and indeed the Ferox trout are found
only in one particular river.

Other great fishing opportunities,
in the area include, sea trout fishing on the Erne Estuary,
pike and coarse fishing on the Cashelard system and Glenade
Lake and some of the country’s best deep sea fishing from
Mullaghmore and Killybegs.
